It was one thing to hear Willie Robertson talking about giving gifts and being good and Christmas. But it was another thing to see the mother and her kids.

They weren’t living in some run-down trailer in the middle of honky-tonk land. No. She was in a modest, one-story house. She appeared at the door with a frazzled and completely baffled look on her face.

“Willie, what are you doing here?” she asked. She talked to him like they could have been classmates.

Maybe they were.

“Well, I have a special guest staying with us who is turning out to be something of a chef. Right, Hunter? Hunter, this is Judy Wallace.”

Hunter nodded since he was carrying a dish in his hands.

“Come on in, please,” Mrs. Wallace said.

Inside, the kids were tiny terrors. Loud, whining, and all over the place.

“Please tell me you didn’t have dinner yet,” Willie said to the woman.

“I barely had lunch.”

She wore black sweatpants and a T-shirt. Her hair was in a ponytail and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. She was pretty but also seemed very tough and no-nonsense.

“We just wanted to bring you some duck and dressing. Hunter helped kill the ducks this morning and then cook them.”

“First time,” Hunter added.

That was when Mrs. Wallace broke down and started crying. Willie went over and gave her a hug and said, “Now, now, I know it can’t taste that bad.”

Hunter felt awkward enough to pass out, so it was such a relief to have some humor thrown in there.

“We’re just thinking about you, okay? Not only the Robertsons but the church. Anything we can do, you let us know. Okay?” Willie gave her an envelope that looked like it might hold a Christmas card.

Hunter wondered if there was something else inside that card. Something to help Mrs. Wallace.

A boy came in asking for some chips while the little girl was tugging at her leg.

“It’s always crazy like this,” Mrs. Wallace said.

“Yeah. I remember those days. I’m not sure I’d want to relive them for long.”

They talked for a little while, but Willie made it clear he didn’t want to disturb her. He just said again they’d be praying for her and left things at that. She hugged both of them before they left.

Back in the car, Willie started it up and looked at Hunter. “Still want your duck and dressing?” he asked.

“No.”

“You know what’s cool about this?” Willie said. “It’s a bunch of firsts here. Your first hunt. Your first kill. Your first cooking experience. All while Mrs. Wallace is going through a bunch of firsts herself. Not the best kind, of course. But it’s nice to combat the bad firsts with the good ones. You know?”

“Yeah.”

“And, Hunter—after all the food you’re going to eat in the next two days, trust me. You’ll thank me.”

Hunter almost thanked him for giving him so much credit with the duck and the meal, but he didn’t.

It would have been another first. Thanking someone spontaneously.

Hunter didn’t want to have too much of a good thing.
